Launch Vehicle Engineer

The Hammers Company is seeking a Launch Vehicle Engineer for employment at the Wallops Flight Facility at Wallops Island, Virginia.

Necessary Experience

0 to 5 years experience

Specific Requirements / Licensing:

  • Ability to coordinate preparation of sounding rocket vehicle hardware including solid propellant motors, ignition systems, flight fin hardware, and Flight Termination System hardware.
  • Knowledge of principles applicable to all types of solid rocket vehicle components such as motors, igniters, electro-explosive devices, hardware, and electrical ignition systems
  • Knowledge of principles of mechanical and structural design of rocket vehicles and ability to develop associated design documentation
  • Experience with ordnance processing is a plus.
  • Must excel at computer aided modeling and drafting as well as finite element analysis. SolidWorks and NASTRAN experience is preferred.
  • Must have excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Training or certification in the following may be required:

  • Electrostatic Discharge ESD Control
  • General Safety Awareness
  • IT Security
  • Hazcom Training
  • Ordnance Awareness or Ordnance Handler’s Certification

Minimum education required for the position:

BS Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for hardware tracking and design for solid rocket motors and flight termination systems
  • Responsible for operation and maintenance of motor ignition systems, tail can and fin assemblies, and other vehicle systems
  • Responsible to assign vehicle system assets to flight missions
  • Responsible for configuration control of the systems, collection, stock, and purchase of components, and oversight of systems during and after missions
  • Responsible to perform other related duties as assigned or required

Required abilities:

  • Ability to work with shop and technician staff for assembly of hardware sets for vehicle systems
  • Ability to organize and track assets of vehicle systems and resolve scheduling challenges
  • Ability to use general software applications to maintain records on items for vehicle systems and to write requirements and reports
  • Ability to generate procedures for handling of solid rocket motors, rocket motor hardware, and qualification test plans and reports
